JOB SUMMARY  

Reporting to the Sr. Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs, the Sr. Counsel is responsible for providing comprehensive legal support and service to all departments and business units within the Vinik Sports Group (VSG) organization. This includes ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, and Local corporate filing requirements, reviewing, drafting, negotiating, managing, and enforcing business contracts and operational agreements, determining when to engage outside legal counsel and overseeing all such outside assignments including, but not limited to, litigation and labor issues, ensuring compliance with all applicable law as well as NHL rules and regulations, preparing the Legal Department Budget and managing in compliance with approved financial parameters, presenting relevant legal educational seminars to operating departments, monitoring trends and  staying abreast of changes in the law within the Company’s areas of operation, supervising and mentoring the development of Corporate Counsel, and assisting the Sr. Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs and VSG Executives on other legal matters, as requested.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Support the VSG organization and the SVP, Legal & Business Affairs on all transactional matters, and collaborate on corporate legal strategies 

  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of all corporate annual reports and other filings as required by law 

  • Evaluate and determine which corporate commercial agreements including, but not limited to, sponsorships, loge, suite, and premium seat arrangements, event agreements, media rights, promotions, contests, raffles, leases, arena operations, and vendor commitments are to be assigned to Corporate Counsel and which are to be retained for drafting and preparation 

  • Ensure compliance with all ADA and accessibility requirements for all venues and facilities managed or operated by the Company, including providing language for necessary signage and ensuring such signage is posted 

  • Work with outside counsel to oversee the filing, defense, maintenance, and enforcement of organization-wide trademarks, copyrights, and other intellectual property matters 

  • Ensure compliance with all data privacy laws and educate internal departments on the requirements of same 

  • Analyze and assess all claims and litigation to determine possible trends and recommend remedial and pro-active corrective measures 

  • Research various legal issues and provide written and oral legal opinions as needed and as requested 

  • Supervise and mentor Corporate Counsel to ensure continued professional growth and development 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the CEO, COO, CFO, and/or SVP, Legal and Business Affairs 

SUPERVISORY & MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Direct oversite over the Corporate Counsel 

GAME/EVENT RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Game/Event Night responsibilities:  No 

  • Approximate number of events worked per year: 0  

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelors’ Degree, and J.D. or LLM from an accredited law school 

  • 7 to 10-years’ progressive, broad-based experience in a law firm or corporate legal department 

  • Admission to the FL Bar and current status as a member in good standing 

  • Superior record of professional achievement and recognition 

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, and a demonstrated ability to handle multiple matters simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision/oversight 

  • Superior communication skills, both oral and written, to include proven experience negotiating with third parties, drafting contracts, legal agreements, and internal memoranda to department staff and Management 

  • Working knowledge of the following areas of the law: 

- Media 

- Copyrights, Trademarks, Intellectual Property 

- Data Privacy 

- ADA Compliance 

- Foundations and other not-for-profit organizations 

  • Strong interpersonal skills including a positive attitude, the ability to work collaboratively and get along well with others, and commitment to team-oriented goals 

  • Ability to work extended hours including weekends as required by deadlines, workload, and event schedule 

  • Computer skills and proficiency with software programs including Word, Excel, and Power Point 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear, and the ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds 

  • Ability to use hands and fingers on office and mobile technology 

  • Ability to listen and speak on phone, in meetings and in one-on-one conversations 

  • Ability to work in an office and arena environment; the noise level is usually moderate, but can be loud; the temperature in the office space is usually moderate, but can vary throughout the arena from warm to very cold depending on location  

  • Ability to work in a energetic and fast-paced environment 

  • Ability to work in areas that can become crowded with equipment and/or people 

  • This is an onsite role; flexibility to work a minority of time remotely 

  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights, holidays, and weekends as necessary
