Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Assistant, Field Operations
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Triple-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees and member club of Diamond Baseball Holdings (DBH), are seeking a full time Field Operations Assistant to work alongside the Head Groundskeeper in the everyday upkeep and operation of the playing surface at PNC Field. This position is tasked with assisting in the repair and daily maintenance of the field and its components as a safe, first-class baseball facility by performing daily turf, dirt and water management, timely fertility and cultural practices, game preparation techniques and short and long term maintenance. During the baseball off season this person will assist the Facilities Operations Department.
Essential Job Functions
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of the playing field. Including but not limited to turf (mowing, edging, fertilizing, aerating, topdressing, overseeding, discovery/control of weeds, insects and diseases) and dirt (infield skin, baselines, home plate, pitchers mound, bullpens and warning track).
- Assist in the control of the PNC Field irrigation system including water management of the playing surface, periodic maintenance checks, repair of leaking lines/valves and winterization.
- Operate and maintain all equipment in a safe manner and keep it in excellent working condition.
- Supervise, mentor and train seasonal and part time game day staff.
- Help prep the playing field for pre-game batting practice by setting up cage, screens, mats and prtective field covers.
- Set-up playing field for play including grooming, chalking baselines, batters boxes, painting outfield foul lines and coaches boxes.
- Maintenance and care of the outside grounds, inclduign upkeep and maintenance to the lawn, and landscapes to include mowing, weed discovery and control, insect control, planting and maintaining shrubs, trees and flowers
- Assist in the coordination and execution of all infield tarp pulls.
- Track Grounds department inventory.
- Maintain a positive relationship with coaching staff.
- Assist the Facilities Department with duties that may include painting, snow removal, basic carpentry and preventative maintenance during the winter months.
Minimum Qualifications
Four year Turf Science Degree or Two Year Turfgrass Certificate. Minimum 1 year experience working for a baseball facility or likeminded operation with a proven track record of excellence. Specific experience in turfgrass management is a must. Must be willing and able to work as part of a team. The ability to operate heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner, knowledge of basic equipment troubleshooting skills and ability to perform labor intensive tasks are a must. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights/weekends and holidays as needed.
